2024: Empowering Indigenous Peoples' Economic Development through International Trade — Small Business Champions Winners

Based in San Salvador, El Salvador, CLAC is a network that represents 1,000 Fairtrade certified organizations in 24 economies in Latin America and the Caribbean. These organizations represent more than half a million producers and workers, with main products including coffee, bananas, cocoa, sugar, honey, fresh and dried fruits, flowers, wine grapes, quinoa, among others. In 2024 CLAC is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Since its start, CLAC has become a pillar of support for small producers through training, technical assistance, and both local and international commercialization of their products.

  • Project Title: “Apoyo para el Acceso a mercados internacionales, generación Oportunidades para emprendimiento y Encadenamientos productivos para pequeños productores (as) de los pueblos indígenas en Latinoamérica” (AOELA)

  • Description: CLAC's AOELA initiative seeks to develop the competencies of small Indigenous producers and increase their sales through understanding of product offerings, demand and an annual networking roundtable.

CLAC plans to:

  • Survey existing product offerings in Latin America that can benefit Indigenous producers.
  • Provide training and technical advice to develop these producers' competencies.
  • Identify markets and companies with a corporate social responsibility interest in supporting Indigenous Peoples in Latin America.
  • Create a catalogue of offerings and contacts.
  • Organize a virtual business roundtable with interested parties.

Located in Winnipeg, Canada, O'KANATA is an organization that empowers Indigenous youth in Canada. Created by indigenous youth, O'KANATA has created the Dreamweavers project to support Indigenous Canadian youth through post-secondary education by encouraging national partnerships and networking to ensure Indigenous youth have employment opportunities.

Project Title: Indigenous Artisan Trade Gateway

Description: The Indigenous Artisan Trade Gateway is a proposed e-commerce platform and global marketplace for Indigenous crafts. Combined with training and networking opportunities, the Indigenous Artisan Trade Gateway will seek to improve the economic opportunities for young artisans across Manitoba, Canada through entering international markets and building their entrepreneurial capacity. By promoting indigenous cultures and craftsmanship, O'KANATA also hopes to increase global awareness and appreciation of Indigenous traditions.
