For trade to be inclusive, it needs to deal with poverty alleviation. There is an important existing literature on trade generally and poverty; but it is scant on regional integration (RI) and poverty. Given the rise in RI, it is important to consider how it might impact on poverty. This session is designed to address to key sets of questions: (1) What are the dynamics of the RI effects on poverty and how can RI be formulated to be more inclusive? (2) Given the existing data constraints in many developing countries, what empirical methods can both realistically and usefully be employed in order to understand the impacts better, and to contribute to improved and more inclusive policy.
