On behalf of ORIGIN, I would like to welcome you all to the Round Table that we have had the opportunity to organize within the АФУХСљКЯВЪЙйЭјзЪСЯ Symposium. First of all, I would like to thank the World Trade Organization for organizing this Public Symposium that allows the civil society to take part in the discussion on the topics that are currently being discussed in the Doha Development Round. I know that it is very difficult to organize such an event. The АФУХСљКЯВЪЙйЭјзЪСЯ secretariat has done a tremendous job. On behalf of ORIGIN, I would like to thank, in particular, Mr. Bernard Kuiten and his team who have worked very hard for making this project a success. Before introducing today’s round table, please allow me to say a few words about our organization. ORIGIN is the first international network of producers of geographical indications, also known as appellations of origin. This network was launched in June 2003 in Geneva; it includes more than 100 producers coming from more than 30 countries and most continents, Africa, North and Latin America, Asia, Eastern and Western Europe. It is a Swiss-based NGO. ORIGIN’s main objective is the promotion of Geographical Indications as an instrument of development. To that end, we have started to create partnerships between producers. For instance, my colleagues from the Antigua coffee in Guatemala and the French pruneaux d’Agen have decided to team up; Argan oil from Morocco and French Comte cheese, as well as or Swiss cheese L’Etivaz and Guinean pineapples have become partners. These partnerships allow for an exchange of information and experience among producers of GIs worldwide. Meanwhile, ORIGIN has focused on lobbying International Organizations and National governments to get better protection of GIs in the АФУХСљКЯВЪЙйЭјзЪСЯ framework. ORIGIN is very happy to have the opportunity to host this round table on geographical indications at a moment when АФУХСљКЯВЪЙйЭјзЪСЯ members are trying to define the negotiation modalities for the Doha Round. This is a fantastic opportunity for ORIGIN to highlight the fact that producers from all over the world are interested in geographical indications. It is particularly true for developing countries, which see in geographical indications a key instrument for the promotion of sustainable development. ORIGIN wants to seize this opportunity to promote a better protection of geographical indications at the international level in front of a high level audience of АФУХСљКЯВЪЙйЭјзЪСЯ delegates and interested third parties. As you all know, the enhancement of the GI protection is one of the key files on the АФУХСљКЯВЪЙйЭјзЪСЯ negotiating table in the context of the Doha round. Two aspects are under discussion at the present moment: the extension to all products of the protection that wines and spirits currently enjoy, which is a crucial question of the so-called implementation issues that interest developing countries; the establishment of a multilateral register for geographical indications. We think that it is crucial to stress the fact that the improvement of GIs’ protection is a key issue for both developed and developing countries. But once and for all we, the producers from all over the world, would like to explain to this high level audience how the reality of producers is, how GIs, our GIs contribute to sustainable development and how important it is to promote a better protection of GIs within the Doha Development Agenda framework. Today, ORIGIN has decided to give the floor to producers representing almost the whole world: Africa, Asia, North and South America and Europe. They will briefly present their own experience in two different sessions: the contribution of geographical indications to sustainable development and the importance to secure a better GI protection in the context of the Doha Development Agenda. I personally hope this morning will turn to be an open and enriching experience for us all and that we can leave this round table with successful conclusions for the interest of all, developed and developing countries. Please feel free to participate to the debate through questions. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of each session. I now leave the floor to Elizabeth Barham for the first session. Concluding speech Ladies and Gentlemen, Please let me thank all the speakers for their excellent presentations. I would also like to thank all the participants in the debate for their questions. ORIGIN’s intention was to offer a clear panorama of the GI framework all around the world from the producers’ point of view. We also wanted to explain why there is a need to better protect Geographical Indications. I think that we have succeeded! Better protecting Geographical Indications boils down to the defence of a fair trade concept. We need to provide for the localisation of productions in the context of trade globalisation. We consider that the progress made on this issue will determine АФУХСљКЯВЪЙйЭјзЪСЯ members’ ability to meet their Doha commitments to provide for a genuine Development Agenda. Please do not hesitate to continue the debate with the speakers and ORIGIN members. We are at your entire disposal for any comments. Thank you very much.
